A Quiet Heart & the Story of “Away in a Manger”
The Story
“Away in a Manger” is not just a kids’ carol. It is powerful theology that helps us marvel at baby Jesus and recognize his Lordship. This hymn is traditionally attributed to Martin Luther because it first appeared in a Lutheran hymnal in the 1800’s. Plus, Luther wrote many hymns to help his children understand the Gospel. However, no one is sure. Even if we can’t confirm its authorship, we all recognize that one of the most popular Christmas songs is reinforcing Biblical truth that we could sing about all year long.
The Song
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
the little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head;
the stars in the heavens looked down where He lay,
the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,
but little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
and stay by my side until morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay
close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
and fit us for heaven, to live with Thee there.
The Message
“Away in a Manger” is the sweet song of adoration for the Christ-child and the humble, child-like petition to be close to him forever. The simplicity of the song is its strength. Its words are easy enough for children to understand but profound enough to remind adults that the baby Jesus is the One who created the very heavens He laid under on the night of His birth. To recognize Him for who He is will give us the peace that was felt the first night of His birth. And it will cause us to never want to leave His side.
